CDM looks to monitor mobile

With the first two phases of the Department of Homeland Security’s Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation program firmly established on agency networks governmentwide, the CDM team is starting to look into how to monitor mobile devices as well.

“We want to be able to help agencies identify where incidents are, orchestrate those incidents throughout their organization and [send] the information to the [National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center],” CDM Program Manager Kevin Cox, said at the Aug. 30 ATARC Federal Mobile Technology Summit. “We also want to add some optimization on the agency response.”

After working under a blanket purchase agreement in the initial phases, CDM is now using DEFEND (Dynamic and Evolving Federal Enterprise Network Defense) task orders  to give agencies more flexibility as they work with integrators to address their needs.  The work for mobile falls under the task order for Group C, which was awarded to CGI Federal on July 16.

Current work involves mapping out mobile connections at the agency level and the networks agencies regularly interact with. Once this work is complete, Cox said, DHS will be issuing a request for service designed especially for mobile.

“We want to align mobile management systems from agencies and move [that information] into the data repository level,” Cox said.  “We want to report on the information, get it summarized at the federal level and help agencies understand their gaps in the mobile space.”

To make this happen, the CDM program is leveraging information from several sources, including a federal mobile tiger team based at the Federal CIO Council and research from ATARC.
